What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

Not every dental problem needs same-day care, but these usually should be seen as soon as possible:

  • Severe or lasting toothache – may be a sign of infection or a deep cavity.
  • Chipped or broken tooth – especially with pain or a sharp edge.
  • Knocked-out adult tooth – acting quickly may give the best chance of saving it.
  • Swelling, abscess or pus – signs of an infection that can spread.
  • Bleeding that will not stop – after an injury or extraction.
  • Lost filling or crown – especially if the tooth is painful or sharp.

What to Do Before You Reach the Clinic

These first-aid steps can help until you are seen:

  • Toothache – rinse with warm water, floss gently to remove trapped food and use a cold pack on the cheek. Do not put aspirin on the gum.
  • Knocked-out adult tooth – hold it by the crown, rinse gently, and try to put it back in the socket or keep it in milk. Do not replant a baby tooth.
  • Broken tooth – save any pieces, rinse your mouth and use a cold pack for swelling.
  • Bleeding – bite firmly on clean gauze for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Lost crown – keep it safe and bring it with you.

Dentist or Hospital: Where Should You Go?

Most dental emergencies are best treated by a dentist, but some situations need a hospital emergency department:

SituationWhere to go
Toothache, broken tooth, lost filling or crownCall your dentist for the earliest appointment
Knocked-out adult toothCall your dentist right away; time matters
Abscess or swelling in the gumCall your dentist the same day
Swelling affecting breathing, swallowing or the eye, or high feverGo to a hospital emergency department or call 911
Jaw injury or heavy bleeding after an accidentGo to a hospital emergency department

What to Expect at an Emergency Visit

Knowing what will happen can help you feel calmer:

  1. Assessment – we examine the problem area and take X-rays if needed.
  2. Pain relief – we focus on easing pain and controlling infection first.
  3. Treatment options – this may include a filling, root canal, extraction or repair of a chipped tooth.
  4. Cost and next steps – we explain the cost and book any follow-up treatment.

Preventing Dental Emergencies

These habits can help lower your risk of a dental emergency:

  • Brush and floss daily – to help prevent cavities and gum disease.
  • Keep up regular check-ups – small problems are easier to treat early.
  • Wear a mouth guard – for contact sports; see our custom sports mouth guards.
  • Avoid chewing hard objects – such as ice, hard candy or pens.
  • Do not ignore early pain – sensitivity or mild pain can be the first sign of a problem.

How Much Does Emergency Dental Care Cost in Calgary?

The cost depends on the exam, X-rays and the treatment you need. Our fees are based on the Alberta Dental Fee Guide, and we explain costs before treatment whenever possible.

Many insurance plans cover emergency exams and treatment. We offer direct billing, accept the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) and offer financing options. If you are looking for emergency dentistry near you, call us and we will explain what to expect.

Frequently Asked Questions About Emergency Dentistry

Most dental clinics, including ours, are not open 24 hours. We offer same-day emergency appointments when available, plus evening and weekend hours. Outside clinic hours, go to a hospital emergency department for severe swelling, trouble breathing or uncontrolled bleeding.

Hospitals can help with severe swelling, injuries and pain relief, but most do not provide dental treatment such as fillings or root canals. For most dental problems, call a dentist first.

For an adult tooth, pick it up by the crown, rinse it gently and try to put it back in the socket, or keep it in milk. Do not replant a baby tooth. Call a dentist right away, ideally within an hour.

Severe pain, swelling, fever, a bad taste or pain that wakes you at night may be signs of infection and should be checked soon. A mild ache that comes and goes should still be checked, but may not need same-day care.

We offer same-day emergency appointments when available. Call as early as possible so we can find the first open time and advise you on what to do in the meantime.

We explain costs before treatment, offer direct billing for insurance, accept the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) and offer financing options. We can also talk about treating the urgent problem first and planning the rest later.
