What is a Tooth Abscess?

Maybe you have heard the term before, think you have it but aren’t quite sure yet. When you have an abscess, it is something that arose from a bacterial infection. The abscess itself is the sac of pus. It can pop up in multiple spots of the tooth for a variety of reasons. There are abscesses at the tip of your root which are called periapical. Then there are abscesses that are at the side of your root called periodontal.

According to the Mayo Clinic, you can get an abscess from letting a cavity go untreated. A lot of people wait until it is too late to treat their cavities.

When you see our Calgary dentist, you are going to have the abscess drained to get rid of the sac of pus. If your tooth is salvageable, you can get a root canal but in other cases, the tooth will have to get extracted. If you do not tend to a tooth abscess, you can end up with something life-threatening.

Look Out for These Symptoms

If you are unsure whether or not you are suffering from a tooth abscess, you need to keep a lookout for the signs and symptoms. If your tooth pain is radiating down your neck or to your ear, that is sometimes an indication of an abscess. If your teeth are suddenly sensitive to extreme temperatures, you might need to come in. Other symptoms can be flu-like, such as a fever or swollen lymph nodes.

As soon as you suspect that this is what you are dealing with, you need to make a call to get treated or you could be dealing with much worse than pain.

These can turn lethal relatively quickly, so treat this as urgently as you would an injury to an extremity. Infections are nothing to mess around about. Call our office right away.

Prevent a Tooth Abscess

Once you receive the necessary treatment, you should start thinking about prevention, so you do not have to deal with that again. If you take great care of your teeth, you greatly diminish the possibility of this happening again.

Some simple things to make sure that you do each day includes drinking fluoridated water, using fluoride toothpaste in the morning and night, and flossing on a daily basis.

Some other changes that you can implement over time are things like avoiding sugary foods (especially if you do not brush after), changing your toothbrush every few months, and seeing a dentist for regular professional cleanings.

When you make these changes, you are decreasing the likelihood of you having tooth decay which can lead to an abscess.
